MUST READ BELOW BEFORE WATCHING THE CLIP!
I post this comedians performance with some trepidation; it raises some very serious issues in a very aggressive way. The first thing I must warn you of is the strong use of language; if you are easily offended then don’t watch this clip but look at some other posts on my site. The reason I’m using this clip is because of the audience interaction and it’s taken me a while to find the full video as some people have been, to put it bluntly stupid by, just putting part of the video up so those who see it think it’s real (you’ll understand if and when you watch it). I have been trawling though comments on youtube and other sites where people have written “she had it coming”, “what a ….!” and so on. The reaction is the point of it.
To explain, Brendon is doing his stand up routine and he seemingly picks on this brother and sister in the audience. The woman starts to heckle him and accusing him of being racist. This is where the problem lies as people end the clip with her leaving and the audience are cheering; but actually she and her ‘brother’ (you’ll understand why I use ” when you watch the video) are a plant. The whole point is to whip the audience up into some reaction, they return to the stage and I don’t think there is anything more I need to add about that – Brendon explains it at the end anyway.
My point, though, is what is the purpose of a performance? This is what Brendan attempts to say really; it’s all well and good providing entertainment – if that is the purpose of your production then fine. However, you can still be entertaining and provide a message which is quite a Brechtian thing to say really – he wrote The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui which is entertaining but through the entertainment and ridiculousness presents the idea that Hitler could of been stopped. This is my thought process; I began by wanting to create an entertaining piece but now I have those elements I am considering my point/message and if you follow my writings hopefully you’ll start to see that developing.

Wow, that turned aggressive (even though they were just acting, I still felt uneasy). The comedian highlights a good point. Somehow though, if I’d have been in the audience I would have felt cheated to find out they were faking, like they were lying to me to try and get a reaction from me. Hope that makes sense. I’m really tired.
If i didn’t know they were plants I would feel really bad for them, though I still find my self laughing at him! x
